We do not theorize about homelessness. We know it from the inside. The shelter system in the United States, Canada and Europe was not built to restore dignity. It was built to manage numbers. Daniel Mwendanga experienced this directly in the DC shelter system, where the conditions, the rules, the environment and the culture of many shelters strip people of the very dignity they need to rebuild their lives. House of Dignity operates and advocates across three regions. In the United States, our primary focus is Washington DC, where our founder's lived experience in the shelter system provides the foundation for our work and our reform advocacy. We are expanding programs to other major US cities where homelessness intersects with systemic failure. In Canada and Europe, we partner with local organizations to bring dignity-centered models to communities where the homeless population is growing and the shelter system is under strain.House of Dignity opère et plaide dans trois régions. I have been in those shelters. I know what it means to sleep in a bed surrounded by strangers, to eat what is given, to stand in a line and wait to be assigned a number. I know the feeling of invisibility that the shelter system can create. And I know that the people in those beds are not problems to be managed. They are human beings with stories, with gifts, with potential. House of Dignity is my response to everything I saw, felt and lived. It is not a program built from a distance.
